Richard Dickson, head of Mattel’s Barbie business, is leaving the toymaker to head to clothing retailer Jones Apparel Group as president and CEO, JAG said today.
Dickson, 41, joined Mattel in 2000 as Senior Vice President, Marketing, Media & Entertainment Worldwide, Mattel Brands. In 2008 he was tapped to oversee a newly reorganized Barbie business as General Manager for the overall Barbie brand. He’s widely recognized for revitalizing the iconic doll line and its licensing.
Prior to Mattel, Dickson held leadership, general management and
merchandising posts at Bloomingdales and at Estee Lauder Companies, which in
2000 purchased an ecommerce site, Gloss.com, that Dickson had launched.
****** Barbie is back, posting her biggest sales increase in years. Mattel Inc.'s iconic doll and a big improvement in overall profitability helped the largest U.S. toy maker generate an 86% increase in fourth-quarter profit, topping analysts' estimates. Mattel executives on Friday expressed optimism about the company's 2010 revenue prospects, citing strong sales of such toys as Barbie's townhouse, Matchbox and the holiday sell-out Mind Flex game, as well as an improved lineup of toys based on movies and television shows. As part of the CFDA's (Council of Fashion Designers of America) partnership with Mattel's Barbie, designers have customized a Barbie Basic doll -- who dons a little black dress -- with shoes, bags, jewelry and more in their trademark styles. October 13, 2009 We just learned that there will be a series of three Christian Louboutin dolls (and a shoe pack) coming out in a series. We will be carrying the Christian Louboutin Doll, According to Liz Grampp "She has new hair color, new custom skin tone, new face mold, and yes...new custom arched foot. So while there have been some fantastic sculpting adjustments made to create the most incredible new and exciting dolls, it's truly to bring the artistic vision to life." This is certainly exciting news! We understand there might be some confusion, especially on the exciting BFMC Palm Beach Collection images which were posted earlier today on bc.com; but are no longer available for viewing. We apologize that those images are not quite ready, but will be sure to post when they are available. The 2010 line has a lot of exciting concepts which we are sure you will be excited as well. *****************
Called Barbie's Tea House, the Argentine store is really an American Girl store (also owned by Mattel) done Barbie-style. That means lots of pink on the exterior and interior of the store and across product. Associates wear pink t-shirts with "I'm a Barbie Girl" embossed on the back. A pink Volkswagen Bug with the Barbie logo splayed on its side sat out front. The front of the narrow store is dedicated to product, including an ample selection of T-shirts, skirts, pants and handbags - most in shades of pink - as well as dolls and other trinkets such as hair and beauty care, watches, two-way radios, and even golf sets under the Barbie theme. At the center is a Barbie Beauty Center, where girls can get their nails and hair done under styles such as the Butterfly, Princess, or Fashion Fever. After the salon, a Barbie tea counter serves up cupcakes, pies and beverages for both young girls as well as moms and grand moms. For many, however, the big draw is Casa de Barbie, a fantasy-land behind closed doors in the rear where parties are held. The room includes toys and dolls, costumes, make up and jewelry, and a small catwalk for girls to parade under disco lights. But the store is also designed to appeal to older, former Barbie owners. Tidbits of Barbie history are written on the walls. "The Barbie Store is a place where little girls feel big and mothers return to their childhood," Tito Loizeau, one of the owners of the store, told theTelegraph. The former marketing executive came up with and collaborated with Mattel on the idea. The store is a licensed location. By Argentine's standards, prices at the store are high. A Butterfly hairstyle - including fairly tale makeup - costs 120 pesos (around $30). Admission to Casa de Barbie costs 25 pesos ($7.00) for an individual visit and much more to throw a full party. The opulent Shanghai store, which Mattel spent $30 million to construct, also includes facials, customized doll creations, and $10,000 adult-sized wedding dresses. At night the store's two restaurants become trendy bars complete with DJ's, pink martinis and karaoke. The store operated by Mattel is expected to help drive branding and expansion in China. Not surprisingly, the ultra-thin Barbie and both stores openings have drawn controversy. Even in Argentina, known for its obsession with plastic surgery, about 30 Barbie dolls were burned in the provincial capital La Plata this past March 9th, Barbie's official birthday. On September 15, 2009, you’ll be able to watch Barbie And The Three Musketeers! ******************** Barbie, the iconic doll is to be given a traditional Bavarian makeover in time for this year's beer-swilling Oktoberfest, manufacturer Mattel revealed Wednesday. Munich-based designer Lola Paltinger is creating a traditional Bavarian dress, or dirndl, for the fashion-conscious toy figure, the company said. Paltinger, whose dirndl designs have been worn by socialite Paris Hilton, is to dress Barbie in a black silk pinafore dress, matched with a lace blouse and a hat. Alongside Barbie's version, a full-size edition of the dress will be unveiled at events including the Oktoberfest, the world's largest beer festival which draws millions of visitors annually from around the world. Designers uch as Calvin Klein have revamped Barbie's wardrobe for her 50th birthday. Earlier in the year, German Chancellor Angela Merkel was immortalized as a Barbie doll. And while the Bavarian outfit would theoretically fit Barbie Merkel, the chancellor is known to prefer demure trouser suits over the frilly, cleavage-boosting dress worn across southern Germany. May 28, 2009 Mattel is to relaunch Barbie in the UK with new packaging and marketing as part of a global initiative to market the 50-year-old doll brand as a “fashion” icon. The makeover, which also covers point of sale promotion and the brand’s website, is part of a global strategy to provide “a consistent approach” in the way Barbie dolls are packaged and marketed. New packaging will be introduced from the end of July ahead of a television campaign breaking mid-August. The company aims to have “fully consistent” packaging by spring/summer 2010. Erica Vankamp, marketing director for Barbie, says the new concept is “testament to the brand’s commitment to bringing Barbie to life”. Mattel has partnered with Hamley’s, which sees the “Barbie area” at the London toy store given a revamp in line with the new look.
